Will It Fit? Check Before Your Sofa Arrives
The sofa you love is only the right sofa if it actually reaches the room. Before you order, pop your measurements into our free Furniture Fit Calculator and find out in seconds whether your piece will clear your front door, your stairs or your lift — no tape-measure panic on delivery day.
1The three numbers everything depends on
Every check this tool runs starts from the same trio of measurements, so it's worth getting them spot-on before you look at a single doorway.
- Width — side to side, taken square-on to the front of the piece.
- Height — floor to the tallest point, including any back cushions or raised arms.
- Depth — front face straight back to the rearmost point.
2Getting it through the front door
More deliveries stall at the doorway than anywhere else. Look past the obvious gap and measure the full opening.
- Clear width — between the inner edges of the frame, not the door slab.
- Clear height — floor to the top of the frame, ignoring any decorative trim.
- Turning room — the floor space in front of and beside the door used to angle the piece in.
3Taking on stairs and landings
Staircases trip up more deliveries than any other stretch of the route. It's rarely the steps themselves — it's the turns.
- Narrowest point — measure the tightest usable width along the whole flight.
- Headroom — the ceiling or soffit height directly above the stairs.
- Turns and landings — every bend needs enough depth to swing the piece round.
4Lifts: the door and the cabin
For flats and upper floors a lift is really two checks in one. Squeezing through the doors is only half the job.
- Door opening — width and height of the lift entrance.
- Cabin space — the internal width, depth and height once you're inside.
- Room to turn — enough space to angle the piece and for the delivery team to stand.
5The bits people forget to check
Before delivery day, walk the full route from kerb to room and keep an eye out for these easy-to-miss snags:
- Narrow hallways and the internal doors between rooms
- Sharp corners where the route changes direction
- Low ceilings, pendant lights and meter cupboards
- Stair rails, garden gates, porches and any gated or restricted access
6Setting up for a smooth delivery
A few minutes of prep keeps delivery day quick and stress-free:
- Clear the route — lift rugs, move side tables and shift anything in the way.
- Protect walls, door edges and bannisters where the piece will pass.
- Book the lift or reserve parking close to the entrance if you can.
- Keep outdoor paths clear, dry and safe to walk.
The Furniture Fit Calculator is a planning aid designed to help you estimate whether a piece can travel through your doors, stairs or lift. It treats furniture as a simple box, so real-world results can differ.
Accuracy can be affected by:
- Small measuring errors — double-check anything that comes back close.
- Curved arms, scatter backs or other non-boxy shapes.
- How far a piece can realistically be tilted or rotated in place.
- Fixed feet or legs that can't be removed.
- Thresholds, skirting, radiators and other fixtures that eat into clearance.
The final check is always yours. If a result is borderline, re-measure or ask us before you buy. Where a delivery can't be completed because of access, our Delivery & Returns policy applies.
